Atlantic Salmon vs Salmon Trout in South Africa: Know What You’re Buying

If you shop for salmon in South Africa, you may see both Atlantic salmon and fish sold as salmon trout. They can look similar in a display, but they are different fish, and the name on the pack matters.

Atlantic salmon: a distinct species

Atlantic salmon is Salmo salar. Jono Salmon Co. sells Norwegian Atlantic salmon in individually portioned pieces. It is a different species from rainbow trout, even though both belong to the salmon family.

What “salmon trout” usually means here

In the South African market, “salmon trout” is commonly used for larger rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, including trout raised in sea water. It is a market name, not a reliable statement that the fish is a genetic cross between Atlantic salmon and trout. WWF-SASSI describes “salmon trout” as a name formed by combining the names of Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout. South African aquaculture sources describe sea-run trout as rainbow trout.

So the locally farmed fish you may see sold as salmon trout is generally trout raised for the local market, not Atlantic salmon. If a supplier claims a particular fish is a hybrid, ask for the scientific species name and product documentation rather than relying on the common name.

Do salmon–trout hybrids exist? Yes. International research has produced and studied hybrids, commonly crosses between Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and brown trout (Salmo trutta), including experimental seawater aquaculture trials. That shows a hybrid can be produced; it does not show that South African fish sold as “salmon trout” are hybrids or that such a hybrid was developed specifically for Southern African waters. South African government sources describe sea-run trout as rainbow trout.

Why choose Atlantic salmon from Jono Salmon Co.?

If you specifically want Atlantic salmon, choosing a product labelled Salmo salar gives you the species you came for. That clarity matters in a market where trout can be sold under a salmon-like name.

Atlantic salmon is known for its full, rich flavour and firm flesh, and it works across simple weeknight meals as well as more special dishes. I chose it for Jono Salmon Co. because I wanted to offer genuine Norwegian Atlantic salmon in straightforward, useful portions.

Our approximately 200g portions are individually frozen, so you can take out the amount you need and keep the rest frozen for another meal. That makes it an easy option for customers who want clear portion sizes and a convenient way to keep Atlantic salmon on hand.

Nutrition: a good choice, without exaggerated claims

Atlantic salmon provides protein and marine omega-3 fats. Rainbow trout is nutritious too, and it would not be accurate to promise that Atlantic salmon always contains more fat or omega-3. The amount in either fish changes with feed, farming conditions and the individual product. In a 2026 Nofima comparison using fish fed the same diets, rainbow trout stored more omega-3 in its fillet than Atlantic salmon.

So why choose Salmo salar? Choose it when you want the distinct taste and cooking qualities of Atlantic salmon, a clearly identified species, and the convenient 200g portions supplied by Jono Salmon Co. Trout is a worthwhile fish in its own right; the best choice depends on which fish you want and how you plan to cook it.

Fat and bones: what to expect

There is no single fat-content rule that applies to every salmon or trout product. Feed, farming conditions, season and the part of the fish all matter. Check the label or ask the supplier for information about the fish you are buying.

Bones depend heavily on how the fish is sold and prepared. A whole or lightly trimmed trout will naturally leave you with more bones to work around than a neatly portioned fillet. Both salmon and trout fillets can contain pin bones, so check and remove them before cooking if needed.

Which one should you choose?

There is nothing wrong with choosing trout. It has its own flavour, texture and price point. The important thing is knowing whether you are buying rainbow trout sold as salmon trout or Atlantic salmon. If you specifically want Atlantic salmon, check that the label says Salmo salar.

Jono Salmon Co. portions Norwegian Atlantic salmon into convenient approximately 200g pieces. We want customers to know exactly what is in the pack and what they are buying.
